Aerodynamic constraints on the production of palatalized trills: the case of the Slavic trilled [r]

چکیده

Production of a trill depends on several articulatory and aerodynamic constraints. These constraints can be held responsible for various sound changes in Slavic languages which all involve depalatalization or frication of ProtoSlavic palatalized trilled r. As soon as a trill is affected by palatalization, the aerodynamic conditions are changed and the possibility of trill production lowers. Small deviations in aperture size and air velocity can lead to a failure of a trill. This paper proposes a phonetic explanation for the depalatalization and/or frication of the Proto-Slavic palatalized trilled r by considering the detrimental effects of articulatory and aerodynamic constraints on the production of a palatalized trill.

The Interaction between Contrast , Prosody , and

Russian maintains a contrast between non-palatalized and palatalized trills that has been lost in most Slavic languages. This research investigates the phonetic expression of this contrast in an attempt to understand how the contrast is maintained. One hypothesis is that the contrast is stabilized through resistance to coarticulation between the trill and surrounding vowels and prosodic positio...

On the incompatibility of trilling and palatalization: a single-subject study of sustained apical and uvular trills

The production of trills requires precise articulatory and aerodynamic settings, which appear to be hardly compatible with secondary palatalization – the raising and fronting of the tongue body. Yet, the precise reasons for this incompatibility are still poorly understood, largely given the paucity of articulatory work on trills. Moreover, previous investigations of palatalized trills have been...

Aerodynamic characteristics of trills and phonological patterning

The present study attempts to characterize the aerodynamic conditions required for the production of apical trills and to account for some universal tendencies in the patterning of trills in terms of their aerodynamic and distinctiveness requirements. In order to ascertain the aerodynamic conditions required for trills, oropharyngeal pressure (Po) and airflow were recorded simultaneously in two...

The Displays and Sonations of the Black-chinned Hummingbird (trochilidae:

—Studies on the sonations (nonvocal communicative sounds) of birds have revealed a wide diversity of mechanisms and functions. We describe the kinematics and sounds of the display dive and shuttle display of the male Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri). Males produced an integrated series of trilled and tonal sounds during their displays. Through a combination of experiments on wi...

Uneven sampling and the analysis of vocal performance constraints.

Studies of trilled vocalizations provide a premiere illustration of how performance constraints shape the evolution of mating displays. In trill production, vocal tract mechanics impose a trade-off between syllable repetition rate and frequency bandwidth, with the trade-off most pronounced at higher values of both parameters. Available evidence suggests that trills that simultaneously maximize ...
